Tips on how to talk sports

1. Ask questions. One thing that you will learn quickly being around sports lovers is that they all have an opinion and they are not shy about sharing. All true-blue sports fans love to talk about their favorite team and sport, so to take the focus off yourself and your lack of knowledge about sports and stick to asking questions. For example: Who is your favorite team or player?, Who do you think will be their most challenging opponent?, What do you think about (insert team name)? etc.

2. Listen. Pay attention to those avid sports fans around you can pick up important sports figures by just listening. If you are watching a game be sure to listen to the commentators you are sure to pick up tidbits of wisdom and sports jargon that will come in handy during a conversation.

3. Know the Evil Empires. Every sport has teams that are considered "Evil Empires", those teams that have the mega bucks to pay out to players or coaches so they can create a stacked team. Knowing who these "evil empire" teams are can come in handy especially when you are in a group of sports fanatics. Just dropping one of the team names typically sparks a heated conversation that will deflect from your lack of knowledge, then all you have to do is sit back and listen. The following are some of the teams that are considered "Evil Empires"...

  • MLB- New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox
  • NFL- Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots
  • NBA- Los Angeles Lakers
  • NCAA Basketball- Duke Blue Devils
  • NHL- Detroit Red Wings

4. Be agreeable. Just agree with them, after they have stated their opinion then just nod your head and say that you agree, by agreeing with them you will win their favor and the chances of being prodded with further questions is reduced. If you come face-to-face with a sports fan that keeps wanting to debate just be passive-aggressive and say "We'll have to see if...(insert the debtors opinion)".

5. Learn some key phrases. Be prepared with certain phrases just in case you are cornered by a avid sports fan, using these phrases will ignite a conversation and the spotlight is off your lack of sports knowledge. If someone continues to brag about a certain player or team, just say "Do you think he/team will win a championship this season?". If you are being pushed to give your opinion about a certain player or team just say, "I think he/they are so overrated!" A loyal (insert team name) fan continues to ask you who your favorite team is just say, "It is to hard to choose there is so much great talent out there."

6. Get out of the hot seat. If you find yourself in a desperate situation and need to get the heat off you then it is time to change the conversation by more children are playing video games than sports. Bringing up any of these topics is sure to start a debate and will detour questions that are sports-specific.

7. Start learning. Tap into those plethoras of knowledge that are around you, brothers, dad's, uncles, etc. are great people to help you to begin learning about sports and they are sure to enjoy the opportunity to share their sports knowledge. Begin watching television sports networks and shows like those on ESPN can help teach you sports jargon and will also equip you with information.

The popularity of sports gifts extend beyond US borders. In many countries, like Brazil, US sports team and university apparel are deemed appropriate gifts for business giving. The good thing is, with a sports fan you always have gift ideas. Sports fans love to receive anything related to their favorite team, player or sport. You can find everything from jerseys and tee shirts to mouse pads to even salt and pepper shakers and personalized team beer mugs. A real sports fan is going to be thrilled to have something with his favorite team logo no matter what it is.
