About the Holiday

What if Cats and Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day is a day to think about "what if" my cat or dog had opposable thumbs. Besides humans there are a few animals that do have opposable thumbs: chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans. Some things your cat or dog may do with opposble thumbs include turning the doorknob and taking themselves out for a walk or go to the bathroom, open (and raid) the refrigerator, grab the remote and change the channel, and open bags/purses This holiday was created by Thomas and Ruth Roy, who over many decades owned several cats and dogs. Ironically, in 1995 Roy appeared in a movie with Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis, called 12 Monkeys. Perhaps we should be grateful our pets don't have opposable thumbs. If they did they would not be so happy to have us help them.
