National Pound Cake Day pays tribute to the cake that got its name because it was traditionally made with a pound of each of four ingredients -- flour, butter, eggs and sugar. Typically, this makes a cake that is too large for most families, so the size is usually reduced. Though so long as the 1:1:1:1 ratio is kept, the cake is still considered a pound cake. This type of cake is believed to have been around since the 1700s.
