About the Holiday

National Sponge Cake Day celebrates the tasty cake that is based on flour, sugar, and eggs, and sometimes leavened with baking powder. The sponge cake is thought to be one of the first non-yeasted cakes, and may have originated on the Caribbean island of Grenada in the early 19th century. The most well-known American version of this baked delight is an Angel Food Cake.
