About the Holiday

The history of the ice cream sandwich can be traced to Renaissance-era English trifles and 18th century Charlottes (rich compositions of sweet cream and biscuits). Advances in freezer technology made ice cream available to many Europeans and Americans by the 18th century, and the old favorites were transformed! Ice cream sandwiches, as we Americans know them today, became a treat of the "common folk", hawked by street vendors in cities, resorts & fairs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Now, over 100 years later, we get to celebrate National Ice Cream Sandwich Day by enjoying this nostalgic and incredibly delectable treat.[1]
