About the Holiday

Squirrel Appreciation Day pays tribute to our furry friend who bounces gleefully across the yard and makes death-defying jumps from tree to tree with grace and ease. Squirrels live in almost every habitat, except for the extreme polar regions the driest deserts. From the common Grey Squirrel to the Flying Squirrel there are over 280 living species of squirrel.[1]

Squirrel Appreciation Day was created by Christy Hargrove in 2001. While there are no official events for this holiday, she advises people to celebrate by putting out extra food for the squirrels. So, take some time to feed a squirrel, or just sit back and enjoy watching their carefree antics.[2]
