About the Holiday

New Year's Dishonor List Day was started in 1977 at Lake Superior State University in Marie, Michigan by the university's Public Relations Director W.T. (Bill) Rabe. At that year's holiday party, a list of overused words was created. Knowing that New Year's Day is typically a slow media day, he released the list of words that should be banished from the Queen's English. That inaugural list received much attention and they decided to make it an annual event.[1]

You can find the most recent banished words at the university's website. The 2013 list includes the following...

  • Fiscal Cliff (amen)
  • Kick the can down the road
  • Double Down
  • Job Creators/Creation
  • Passion/Passionate
  • YOLO (You Only Live Once)
  • Spoiler Alert
  • Bucket List (about time)
  • Trending
