National Cheese Fondue Day celebrates this dish where pieces of food are dipped into a warm melted cheese mixture. Cheese fondue originated in Switzerland in the early 19th century. The typical cheeses used include Gruyere, Emmental (Swiss cheese), Raclette, Beaufort, Fontina, and cheddar. Ingredients often inclduded in cheese fonde include white wine, beer, brandy, as well as flour or corn starch to thicken. Foods that are often used to dip into cheese fondue include pieces of French baguette, apples, vegetables like broccoli, carrots and cauliflower, pretzels, and pears.
