About the Holiday

The mission of International Day for Disaster Reduction is to raise awareness about the types of disasters that can happen and to find ways to better prepare for them and to reduce the factors that contribute to them. Each year has a different theme determined by the United Nations which focuses on a disaster topic and it coordinates efforts to make improvements within that area. For more information, the has a webpage dedicated to this observance.

The origin of this holiday dates back to December 22nd, 1989 where the General Assembly of the United Nations designated the second Wednesday of October as International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction. On December 21st, 2009 a subsequent resolution renamed the holiday to International Day for Disaster Reduction and changed its date to October 13th.
