About the Flower

The beautiful Iris takes it's name from the Greek word for "rainbow". There are over 300 species in the Iris family and they are widely found throughout Europe, the Middle East, Northern Africa, Asia and North America. The roots of the Iris plant are used in perfumes and aromatherapy, and as a sedative medicine.

Fun and Interesting Facts

The dried roots of the Iris are sometimes given to babies as relief for teething.

Certain brands of gin get flavoring and color from the Iris root.

The Iris is the emblem of France, and was used as the basis for the fleur-de-lis symbol.

The Iris is also the state symbol of Tennessee.
