Goth in is a subculture. Goth used to be a subclassification of punk. In the early to mid 80s, it emerged as a subculture in its own right, complete with its own graphic art, literature, music, and fashion. There is so much diversity within the gothic world that its members strongly resist attempts at definition and labeling.

Typical gothic fashion includes dyed black hair, dark eyeliner, black fingernails, black period-styled clothing; goths may or may not have piercings. Styles are often borrowed from the Elizabethan, Victorian or medieval period and often express Catholic or other religious imagery such as crucifixes or ankhs.

emo - A style of rock music known as "emotional hardcore" or "emocore". Emo has been associated with a stereotype common to some Goths, includes being emotional, sensitive, shy, introverted, or angst-ridden. The emo fashion is also recognized by its hairstyles, including long side-swept bangs, sometimes covering one or both eyes. Hair that is straightened and dyed black is also popular. However some emos are known to wear bright colors, not just black.

  • Note: Marilyn Manson is NOT goth. He's just...weird.
