About the Flower

Known botanically as the Paeonia, the Peony is thought to be named after Paeon, a student under Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine and healing. The mythology holds that Asclepius became jealous of Paeon, but Zeus intervened and saved Paeon from Asclepius' wrath by turning him into a flower.

The Peony is native to Asia, southern Europe and western North America. The flowers are large and fragrant and are found in many colors, including pink, red, white and yellow.

The Peony is one of the smallest living creature national emblems in the country of China.
