About the Flower

The Lily's botanical name, Lilium (Latin) was also the Greek name, "leirion" from which the name "lily" was derived. There are over 100 species in the Lily family, and these can be found across much of the world in largely woodland habitats.

Fun and Interesting Facts

One legend tells that the Lily sprang from Eve's tears, when after being expelled from Eden she learned she was pregnant.

Certain bulbs of the lily plant are grown in China as a luxury or health food. They are typically eaten in the summer as they posses the ability to reduce internal heat. These bulbs can be stir-fried, grated and used to thicken soup, or processed for the extraction of starch. The taste and texture of the bulb has been compared to a potato.
