The delicate Lilac is a member of the olive family, and is native to Europe and Asia. It's botanical name is Syringa. The lilac flower blossoms in the spring and is found on shrubs or small trees. Typically purple in color, lilacs are sometimes found in shades of pink or white.

The wood of the Lilac tree is very hard and dense. Thus, it has traditionally been used for engraving, and in the construction of musical instruments, and knife handles.

In Greece, Lebanon, and Cyprus, the lilac is a symbol of Easter.

The Lilac is the state flower of New Hampshire.

Spokane, Washington is known as "Lilac City".
