The Hydrangea is actually a flowering plant, native to southern and eastern Asia, and the Americas. In most species, the flower heads are white, but they can also be found in stunning shades of blue, red, pink and purple, depending on the pH levels in the soil from which it grows.

In the Azores Islands of Portugal, Faial Island is known as the "blue island" due to the vast number of Hydrangeas found there.
