This day honors Hymen Lipman, who on March 30th, 1858 received a patent for his pencil with an attached eraser. The wood of a pencil is typically cedar so it would be strong enough to withstand sharpening and not bend. The "lead" is actually non-toxic graphite. 75% of all pencils are yellow. In the 1800s the best graphite was from China. Yellow is associated with royalty and respect in China.
In Middle English the word pencel means "artist's brush" which was borrowed from Old French words pincel or peincel which means painting. One pencil can write 45,000 words and draw a line 35 miles long. It can also write in zero gravity, upside down, or in the water. The average size tree can make 170,000 pencils. More than 2 billion pencils are used in the U.S. each year and more than 14 billion world wide.
