About the Holiday

Martin Luther King Jr. Day honors, celebrates and commemorates the life of the great civil rights leader. This holiday is always celebrated close to his birthday of January 15th. King was assassinated in 1968, soon after his assassination began a campaign to create a federal holiday in his honor. Martin Luther King Day was signed into law by Ronald Regan in 1983. King learned about discrimination first hand as a young child and he desired to make the world a better and fairer place through his non-violent civil rights movement. Today is a day not to only celebrate and pay tribute to a great man, but above all it is a day of service to help people in need in your community.
