About the Holiday

Earth Day is a day to celebrate our Earth and to remind ourselves to make changes, and encourage others to make changes, toward a more earth-friendly lifestyle. Common activities include planting trees, picking up litter and reducing electricity and gas usage.

The first Earth Day was held on April 22nd, 1970 due to the efforts of Wisconsin Senator, Gaylord Nelson. He was inspired to bring environmental protection onto the national political agenda after witnessing the the massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969. That first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States EPA and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts.[1]
