Aseret Yemei Teshuva

The Aseret Yemei Teshuva or Days of Repentance is a Judaica holiday also known as the Days of Awe. This is the ten days starting with Rosh Hashana and ending with Yom Kippur. This is a time of serious introspection, one must consider their sins and repent before Yom Kippur. The belief is that God keeps "books" with how one will live their life and when and how they will die. Behavior during the Days of Repentance can change God's decree. The actions that can change the decree are "teshuva, tefilah, and tzedakka;" or repentance, prayer and good deeds. The books are sealed on Yom Kippur.

It is custom to seek reconciliation with people one has wronged during the year. The only way to atone for sins against a person is to seek forgiveness and find ways to right the wrongs you have committed against them.

Work is permitted from Tishri 3 to Tishri 9 except for the Shabbath when no work is normally allowed. The Shabbat during the Days of Repentance is considered Shabbat Shuvah or Sabbath of Return.
