Under ideal conditions an asparagus spear can grow 10″ in a 24-hour period. Size matters - the thicker the diameter the better. Asparagus was considered a delicacy and was prized by the Romans and Greeks. The Greek word for stalk or shoot is asparagus. Asparagus is known to have diuretic properties, be a laxative, and even a sedative. Some people notice a strong odor in their urine after eating asparagus this may be due to a sulfur compound called a mercaptan that is in asparagus which when broken down releases a funny scent.

'''Old Maid's Day''' is a celebration for women who have not married nor have any children at a non-typical age. To be referred to as an ''old maid'', or ''spinster'', some references cite this age as 35, while others suggest that it would be closer to 45 as a woman approaches the end of her child bearing years. This "defining" age, has probably increased over the years as couples have increasingly wed at older ages. Celebrations range from the humorous to that of proclaiming the desirability of the single life. Activities include girl parties, dating dances, and girls' trips.

Most sources point toward the end of WWII as the origins of this holiday. Due to the long war, many couples had postponed their weddings for a significant period of time, while many others had lost their boyfriends overseas during the war. At war's end, many ladies found themselves single and older combined with a shortage of marriageable men. '''National Cancer Survivors Day''' (NCSD) is a celebration of life to to let people know that life after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful and productive. When people are diagnosed with cancer, they need to know that many people beat the disease -- even in the toughest of circumstances. Positive energy and a positive outlook can be one of the best weapons a person has in their battle. To help get the word out, attend a local NSCD event near you. This holiday was started in 1988 by the non-profit National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation.
