The object of being a good gift giver isn't to find accommodating recipients that will be nice when they receive a gift that doesn't work for them (e.g., get a new and understanding girlfriend). Instead, it is to maximize your chances of giving gifts people truly like and to help communicate your feelings to them. Almost any tip oriented article must make certain generalizations in order to keep it from being 500 pages long to attempt to address every different type of person and relationship out there.

That said, the don't buy her clothes tip probably is good advice for 90% of the dating relationships. It's not that she won't understand that you attempted to buy her something you thought she'd look pretty in. It's just that most guys chances of finding something that successfully captures the elements of size, fit, colors and style to match her tastes are slim.
