All pet owners love to spoil their four-legged friends, and what better way to make them feel special then by making homemade dog biscuits. These treats are sure to make any canine buddy happy and they will make a great gift for any holiday or occasion. Making dog treats is simple, and the treats can easily be packaged in different ways or they can be included in a Doggie gift basket.

Store bought dog treats can be very expensive, but creating homemade dog treats is a budget-friendly alternative. Not only are homemade treats good to your wallet, but they are also good for your dog since many commercially-made treats are full of ingredients that are not always good for dogs.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. In a large mixing bowl, combine rolled oats, butter, and boiling water. Let this mixture rest for 10 minutes. While the mixture is resting grease cookie sheets.

After mixture has rested add the cornmeal, sugar, beef or chicken bouillon, milk, Cheddar cheese, and egg to the mixture. Stir well. Mix in the whole wheat flour, one cup at a time, until the dough is stiff. Move the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead, adding additional flour if necessary until the dough is smooth and no longer sticky.

Roll dough with the rolling pin to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut rolled dough with a cookie cutter, and place on greased baking sheet, be sure to space evenly. Re-roll any remaining dough pieces and cut with cookie cutters until all dough has been used.

Bake at 325 degrees F. for 35-45 minutes, until golden brown. Place on cooling rack and let the treats cool and harden completely. Store in air-tight container. Treats keep well for a few days in the refrigerator; they also can be stored in the freezer and defrost as needed.

Recipe Tips:

  • If you do not have bouillon granules, then you can use bouillon cubes by dissolving them in the boiling water before adding to the mixture.
  • For an even healthier option substitute honey for sugar.
