Big Wind Day commemorates the anniversary of the highest surface wind speed ever officially recorded which occurred in the morning of April 12th, 1934 at an observatory on Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. The wind gust measured 231 mph (372 km/h).

Per Weather.com wind speeds of tornadoes, based on the EF Scale (Enhanced Fujita) are:

  • EF-0 65 to 85 mph
  • EF-1 86 to 110 mph
  • EF-2 111 to 135 mph
  • EF-3 136 to 165 mph
  • EF-4 166 to 200 mph
  • EF-5 Over 200 mph

The National Hurricane Center (nhc.noaa.gov) ranges for hurricanes are:

  • Category 1 74-95 mph
  • Category 2 96-110 mph
  • Category 3 111-129 mph
  • Category 4 130-156 mph
  • Category 5 157 mph or higher
